Kia ora SIGIE members,
We’re halfway through 2025 already, and I’m thrilled to share what’s been happening in SIGIE over the past few months - along with what’s coming up!
Past Events & Highlights
Chairs’ Forum – Wellington In March, I had the opportunity to attend the Engineering NZ Chairs' Forum in Wellington. It was a great platform to connect with other Technical and Special interest groups of Engineering NZ, exchange ideas, and work collaboratively on shared challenges.
Congratulations to Zaid Essa A huge congratulations to Zaid Essa for being awarded Fellow of Engineering New Zealand! This honour recognises his outstanding service to the engineering profession and his long-standing contributions to the SIGIE committee.
Wellington Workshop – April 2025 Our first in-person workshop for the year was held in Wellington and delivered in hybrid format for broader access. The event was a success, with strong engagement both in person and online. Thank you to our speakers and everyone who attended!
Current Projects with Engineering New Zealand
The SIGIE committee is involved in two key projects with Engineering New Zealand:
Groups Strategy Project To strengthen collaboration, Engineering New Zealand and group representatives are co-leading a Groups Strategy Project, which aims to develop a roadmap for how we work together to meet member needs across all groups.
Skills Shortage Action Plan [Link] Aiming to address critical skill gaps in the engineering sector, with a focus on hard-to-fill roles and areas especially relevant to immigrant engineers.
Next Event Auckland Career Skills and Job Search Workshop [Register here]
We're excited to invite you to our next in-person workshop, hosted in partnership with the University of Auckland’s EPSA (Engineering Postgraduate Students' Association). This workshop will focus on CV writing, job search strategies, and career planning—valuable skills whether you're just entering the workforce or looking to take your next step.
Staying Connected
We remain committed to supporting our members through advocacy, events, and collaboration. If you have suggestions or would like to contribute, please reach out to us at immigrant.engineers@engineeringnz.org.
Thank you for your continued support - I look forward to seeing many of you in Auckland
later this month!
Ngā mihi nui,
Vincent Selvakumar
